STUMP ELASTIC BANDAGES

Stump elastic bandages are used usually few days after surgery and when then patient can’t use the prosthesis. The goal of stump elastic bandages is to shrink and shape the stump for prosthesis. For BK amputee the stump elastic bandages must be use in order to allow the extension of the knee joint to provide low tension suspension learning to keep the bandage always applied to the leg; dont create bad tension that generate pressure gradient on the stump the avoidance of congestion in the stump; congestion causes swelling. For AK amputee The bandage is passed over the distal end of the stump posteriorly to the gluteal crease. Two additional are made passing over the medial and lateral aspects of the end of the stump in that order, after by several horizontal circular turns of the bandage. When the first passages are finally secured, the bandage is brought down and around the stump and up again using oblique turns or a modified figure eight. Pressure must always be up and out at the distal portion of the stump. This eliminates dog ears and the formation of creases. Never use circular turns which are not oblique as they tend to constrict circulation. Anchorage of bandage to hip joint eliminates any possibility of formation of bulges in this area. The bandage is carried around the body on a level with the iliac crest, (center above), Return to the stump, making a figure eight and again around the pelvis. Finish the bandage by making oblique turns on the stump.
